Going Solo

So, I have been blogging with my fifth grade students and decided to take the plunge into a solo blog. What was I thinking? Do I have that much to say? Who will actually read this? Teaching is a constant adventure that requires you to step off the proven path on occasion and see what happens. Sometimes you surprise yourself and find a shortcut to where you were going or sometimes you just get lost in the woods for awhile. However, it's often in the woods where we learn the most. I try to tell my students this, that the answer is not always the first one or the easiest one, but often they want the shortest route to the end, not always caring if they get it right or wrong. Our world moves fast, and theirs even faster. It's sometimes hard to get them to slow down and actually think before they act or speak. Students today are somewhat self-involved and often don't look outside of themselves to see how their actions and words create ripples around them. My job is to try to teach them to look farther and be aware of their impact on the world, however small it may be at the moment.
